Top free things to do in Pitlochry this summer

Including a visit to the home of The Enchanted Forest

Looking for a day trip destination this summer, that won’t break the bank? Set in the heart of Highland Perthshire, Pitlochry is the perfect destination for families, couples, and solo adventurers seeking a budget-friendly getaway filled with nature, culture, and beauty. From free woodland wanders to scenic riverside strolls, here’s our list of top free things to do, with a little nod to Faskally Wood, the home of Scotland’s favourite sound and light show, The Enchanted Forest:

Explore Faskally Wood – for free!

A tranquil forest on the outskirts of Pitlochry, Faskally Wood is open to the public all year round and is completely free to explore. Popular with walkers, runners, and photographers, this stunning woodland was designed as a “model forest” in the 19th century and now boasts over 25 recorded tree species, with some as old as 200 years. Visitors can enjoy a peaceful stroll around Loch Dunmore or follow the easy, scenic “Forestry Trail” route. Perfect for little legs!

Pitlochry Dam and Fish Ladder

This engineering marvel is both educational and entertaining. Learn how salmon migrate upriver and watch for them leaping through the fish ladder, completely free of charge! There’s also a visitor centre with interactive exhibits and a scenic café terrace overlooking Loch Faskally. With amazing views up and down the River Tummel from the bridge, this visitor attraction is well worth a visit.

River Tummel Walk

For a relaxing ramble, follow the River Tummel for stunning scenery, charming bridges, and the chance to spot wildlife including red squirrels and herons. It’s a gentle walk suitable for all ages and ideal for a summer afternoon.

Loch Faskally

Perfect for paddling, picnicking or simply soaking up the Highland scenery, Loch Faskally is a peaceful spot just a short walk from the town centre. Bring your own paddleboard or just dip your toes in the water on a sunny day.

Free events and hidden gems

Keep an eye out for local markets, music in the park, and community events taking place throughout the summer. Pitlochry also has some wonderful independent galleries and shops you can browse without spending a penny.

Whether you’re exploring enchanted woodlands or enjoying a lochside lunch, Pitlochry offers plenty of ways to enjoy summer without splashing too much cash. And if you do decide to experience The Enchanted Forest this autumn, remember that it’s not only a magical night out, it’s also an event that gives back to the community.

Save money on tickets to The Enchanted Forest

While entry to Faskally is free, tickets are required for The Enchanted Forest event itself. However, the good news is that there are several ways to save money if you’re planning to visit:

  • Book early: Tickets sell fast, and early birds get the best pick of dates and times.
  • Midweek visits: Attending on a weekday (Monday–Thursday), particularly at later entry times after 7.45pm, can be cheaper than weekends and you get exactly the same experience.
  • Free entry: Children under three years old can attend for free, but they still require a ticket to secure a seat on the shuttle bus. If you are attending with someone who requires assistance, The Enchanted Forest offers a limited number of free carer tickets. These are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Participate in competitions: keep an eye out for competitions offering free tickets to The Enchanted Forest on platforms such as www.list.co.uk. Some even offer accommodation packages!

By attending The Enchanted Forest you also get to support a good cause. Ticket sold helps support local charities through The Enchanted Forest Community Fund, which has distributed over £552,000 to community projects in Highland Perthshire since 2015.

Tickets can be booked via The Enchanted Forest website now.
